Valtrex is a prescription drug that is used to treat many disease conditions and infections that are related to the herpes virus.
Valtrex is used in treating cold sores, shingles, and genital herpes. When it is taken every day the drug helps prevent the occurrence of genital herpes.
It also helps in preventing outbreaks or spread of the virus to sexual partners. Valtrex has been found to be effective in treating cold sores and shingles.
The sores can heal more quickly with the use of this drug, but it does not offer a cure for these conditions.
Uses for Shingles
Shingles is also better known as herpes zoster as it is caused by the varicella zoster virus.
This virus also causes chickenpox and many people are infected with this virus as children.
However, the body does not get rid of the virus completely and it tends to remain in the nerve cells and remains dormant.
At a later stage, it gets triggered due to certain illnesses or stress. When this virus becomes active again, it causes shingles.
Some of the symptoms of shingles may include rashes that appear only on one side of the body.
These rashes are accompanied by a burning sensation or tingling pain. Then they turn into blisters that may burst and start oozing.
When this happens, the shingles virus will spread to the other people who never had chickenpox.
The pain caused due to these blisters can be very severe and continue for a long time, much after the rash has disappeared. This condition is medically known as post-herpetic neuralgia.
With the use of Valtrex, the rash will heal very quickly, but it will not alter the length or the severity of the post-herpetic neuralgia.
This drug also does not offer a cure for shingles because the virus will always remain in the body and will sometimes become active again.
Uses for Cold Sores
Cold sores are also known medically as herpes labialis and are usually caused by the herpes simplex virus.
These are also commonly known as fever blisters and normally occur on the mouth or the lips, unlike the canker sores that occur within the oral cavity.
These cold sores are extremely contagious and spread quickly. Many people have been infected with this virus, even when they have not had a cold sore.
The cold sore virus normally does not go away. It tends to remain inactive within certain nerve cells inside the body.
However, the virus may become active again if it is triggered due to stress or illness. Then it may cause cold sores to appear again.
Cold sores heal faster when they are treated with Valtrex. However, it does not offer a cure for cold sores.
Uses for Genital Herpes
Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus and is a sexually transmitted disease.
- vaginal discharge,
- painful urination etc.
Blisters may heal within a couple of weeks, but symptoms may reoccur.
Valtrex does not offer a cure for genital herpes, but it can help prevent genital herpes outbreaks as well as the spread of the virus to other sexual partners.
